IATSE Local 13 has been fighting for the dignity of workers for 125 years, and we are not going to sit quietly by and let our fellow humans be exploited! We’re here to fight for YOU and to support YOU as together we build a better industry.
Everyone has a right to a safe, healthy and inclusive work environment, a living wage, and job protections including due process.
The arts and entertainment industry both generates billions of dollars in revenue annually and is vital to community health and vibrant neighbourhoods.
Yet despite the booming arts and entertainment industry here in Minnesota, and the existence of clear labor standards, many of the people who work in the entertainment industry work for poor wages over long hours in unsafe environments with no meaningful job protections.
Unions, including IATSE Local 13, have long been defenders of living wages, due process, and better working conditions. On the other side, unscrupulous and predatory vendors are undermining labor conditions at many venues and events that were once great places to work.
Everywhere, we see basic community standards of fair and equal pay for equal work, humane working conditions, safe workplaces and worker’s rights eroded. We believe that all workers have a human right to these community standards and we are here to support them in that fight! These workers deserve better pay, better protections, and the basic human right to be treated with dignity.
The time is now. Minnesota just passed some of the best and most worker-friendly wage theft legislation in the country. Look, we’ve all been paid late, or even not at all, but did you know that being misclassified as an independent contractor is legally wage theft? Or not being paid overtime? Being asked to work off the clock?
We’ll fight back, one opportunistic vendor preying on the dedication and skills of their employees at a time.
We’re well-positioned to do this. Unions like IATSE Local 13 are vehicles for both economic and social justice and we have a wealth of gritty experience and fiery passion to bring to the table in the fight for YOU, our fellow workers.
Take benefits for instance: unions have a huge effect on benefits. Union workers are 25% more likely to have health insurance, and their plans are 53% better. Union workers are 22% more likely to have an employer-based pension and their plans are 28% richer. Union jobs have more sick days, more holidays, more advanced notice of scheduling.
And due process when any of those things are challenged.
We are asking American Horse Labor Company to pay its workers fairly!
