Resolution for May 1st: No Work, No School, No Shopping
Apr 18, 2026

REASONING

WHEREAS ICE’s violent attacks are intended to terrorize and divide the working class along racial and ethnic lines.

The January 23rd Twin Cities “day without work, school, and shopping,” alongside the mass movement of rapid response organizing and protests, forced the Trump administration to announce they’re withdrawing ICE from Minneapolis – a significant victory for the working class!

However, despite the announced retreat from MN, ICE’s assault on immigrant communities and the working class will continue in some form locally and ICE infrastructure continues to expand nationally. Trump is also threatening to steal the elections and continue attacking the rights and living standards of the working class and marginalized communities.

The power of the working class to stop working and take mass coordinated action is our strongest weapon to combat Trump’s billionaire agenda. It will take a groundswell of organizing to encourage more protests to take place across the country.

The Workers’ Assembly on February 15th in Minneapolis was endorsed by 21 organizations and had nearly 400 workers from more than a dozen unions in attendance. The Assembly called for a day of “No Work, No School, No Shopping” on May 1st, 2026. May 1st is also now designated as a day of “No Work, No School, No Shopping” by the national May Day Strong coalition and union presidents such as Stacy Davis Gates of the Chicago Teachers Union.

IATSE Local 13 has the opportunity to join the local and national fight against Trump and ICE, and to raise workers’ consciousness about what it’s going to take to win real change.

ACTION ITEMS

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: IATSE Local 13 endorses the May 1st day of “No Work, No School, No Shopping” in solidarity with the day of strikes and actions across the country against ICE and authoritarianism.

IATSE Local 13 signs onto the demands of the Feb. 15th Workers’ Assembly:

-Abolish ICE and DHS.

-No state cooperation: No Minnesotan resources for federal “immigration enforcement.” -Minnesota’s political and business leaders must refuse to collaborate with the Trump administration. Existing sanctuary and separation policies must be preserved and enforced.

-Free our neighbors: release all detainees unjustly held in federal immigration detention camps, and return them to our communities.

-Drop the charges against all protesters and legal observers who have been illegally targeted for resisting or documenting the federal occupation.

-Charge the killers of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, and all those who have suffered or died at the hands of federal agents or while in federal detention.

-Restitution for occupation: an immediate eviction moratorium in Minnesota, and financial compensation for workers impacted by the federal occupation or by unjust federal detention.

-Return the federal land of Fort Snelling to the Dakota People.

IATSE Local 13 will create a May Day Action Committee to lead this work, which will meet at least biweekly till 5/1 and coordinate with our union leadership and other relevant committees or bodies. This committee will set concrete goals, escalating actions, and structure tests, including:

Organizing members to participate in a large labor contingent and handing out May Day action flyers at the next No Kings rally (Sat. 3/28)

Organizing at least 1 training on how workers can participate on 5/1

IATSE Local 13 calls on all unions and the state AFL-CIO to join the call for “No Work, No School, No Shopping” on 5/1 by signing the May Day Strong pledge, participating to the fullest extent that they can, and launching action committees to lead this effort within their unions.
